Flying frogs?...Rhacophoridae is a diverse family of tree frogs occurring in parts of Asia and Africa. This group includes several species with extensive webbing on the hands and feet, allowing them to glide through the air -- and giving them the slightly exaggerated moniker "flying frogs". Many rhacophorid frogs reproduce by depositing eggs in a frothy foam nest placed over standing water. After several da...ys the foam begins to liquify and the tadpoles fall into the water below. Some other members of this family are phytothelmic breeders, utilizing rainwater trapped in tree holes and other vessels as breeding sites. Many new rhacophorid species have been discovered in recent years in Vietnam and other parts of Southeast Asia, including one that has a tadpole with fangs. Over 30% of amphibians worldwide are threatened with extinction. Work is being done on many fronts to understand more about this fascinating group of animals and stem the loss before it's too late.
